Courses on Hungarian Language and Culture in Debrecen
Debrecen Summer School is an independent institution of the University of Debrecen specialized in teaching Hungarian as a foreign language and Hungarian culture. Its mission is to provide its students with a thorough knowledge of both the Hungarian language and culture. Unique among Hungary's similar language institutions, this summer school draws upon a great and long-standing tradition. Established in 1927, it has grown to become the biggest of the Hungarian summer schools. Every year more than 1,000 students from 30-40 countries are taught by an experienced staff of about 50 teachers, recognised as experts in teaching Hungarian and foreign languages.
Language courses cover all levels of language teaching, from beginners to advanced. Intermediary languages are used when neccessary on lower level courses. The Summer School has its own language teaching material, the Hungarolingua series. During the summer courses, in addition to the language classes, lectures are offered Hungarian history and culture. Extracurricular activities include classical music and rock concerts, discos, folk dance parties and folk song learning, picture shows and theatrical performances. Weekend excursions are organised to enable our students to visit the sights of Eastern Hungary. On-campus accommodations and three meals a day are provided for the course participants.
The Hungarian thematic courses in English are recommended offered for those students who do not speak Hungarian but are seriously interested in some aspect of our culture. The best-known and most popular course of Debrecen Summer School is the four-week programme in which foreign students can learn Hungarian from beginner to proficiency levels and, in addition, they can participate in a variety of cultural events. Apart from the thematic lectures on the past and present of Hungary, participants can get acquainted with various aspects of Hungarian folk art and popular art, music and literature, gastronomy and wine culture. The very popular weekend excursions provide an opportunity for the students to get an insight into the traditions and everyday life of some Hungarian regions and settlements.
Since the first and the second half of the four-week course can be completed separately, we hope that everybody will find the most appropriate date to study Hungarian. At the end of the course students can take the Summer School Exam and get a certificate. Many foreign universities accept the ECTS credits for the courses.
