Online "FELVI" Rankings Now Available in English
09.12.2009."Felvi" rankings have been available in English language as well as in an interactive form from November. Those who have not known the „Felvi" Rankings that list institutions and faculties so far because they do not understand Hungarian will now be able to glance at the Hungarian program offering from a variety of aspects.
The staff of the National Higher Education Information Centre has dealt with the ranking of higher education institutions for several years. They compile their ranking list each year, utilising international experiences and their own data as well as data obtained from other institutions, including the Ministry of Education and Culture, and data from reasearch results. What makes a college or a university a good one is, of course, a matter of debate; experts aim to take into account as many aspects as possible, and look at the widest possible range of characteristics of higher education institutions. In preparing the "Felvi" rankings, the difficulty of getting adimitted to the given institution, the excellence of faculty, as well as the secondary school backgrounds of students or sports and entertainment opportunities are considered, among other factors. In addition to all this, the staff compiling the list also incorporates the opinion of students, instructors as well as labour market actors.
The "Felvi" ranking lists have been available at felvi.hu for several years, and they are also published in printed form. This special ranking has also been published as a supplement of HVG, one of the most widely read Hungarian weekly papers. It has been almost four years since the online versions of the the biggest international rankings, such as the ranking list of The Times or the CHE University Ranking were published. The "Felvi" ranking was also made available online at the same time, then in Hungarian only. The service enables everyone to look at the ranking of different institutions and faculties by the aspects they find important in an interactive form. The database providing the basis of the program contains data from between 2006 and 2008, but it is expected to get updated in December 2009. The interactive „Felvi" ranking is already available in English - click here to access it.
The program helps everyone to prepare his or her own ranking list, taking into account the aspects and faculties or institutions they are interested in. The ranking list can be prepared in two steps. First one has to select the institution(s) to be displayed, or the educational fields and programs of interest. This is followed by a selection of the aspects: a maximum of three aspects can be selected from a drop-down menu. The aspects are varied, as the creators of the program aimed to make it possible to search by as many kinds of needs as possible. If the aspects of interest to us have been selected, all we need to do is click on the Show rankings button to see our private ranking.
The English language version of the interactive "Felvi" ranking list contains the data of the Hungarian original, so it was made for orientation in the Hungarian program offering. It enables foreign students to get to know Hungarian higher education institutions better, even if they are not directly affected, or "measure" the university or college that they are or will be attending.
