The schedule of the courses
The Summer University of Debrecen has offered its services for more than 90 years, since 1927, and the courses are mostly run in five cities within Hungary today: in Debrecen, in Budapest, in Pécs, in Kecskemét and in Gödöllő. The initiative has not only grown beyond the boundaries of its founding city, but the summer dates have also proved to be scarce, as more than a thousand students arrive each year from around 30-40 countries worldwide to participate in one of the courses.
Courses fall into two major groups. In addition to Hungarian language studies at different levels, several thematic courses are offered to help students learn about Hungarian culture, history and habits. Thematic courses are held in both English and Hungarian - naturally, the latter are recommended for students with advanced language skills. Courses comprise 60, 80, 90 and 120 teaching hours, but they are also offered during the autumn and spring semesters.
What kinds of courses are launched?
Language courses are offered in Debrecen and in Budapest. Thematic courses are also available in other cities: in Pécs, Kecskemét and Gödöllő. Language courses in Budapest are mostly adapted to the needs of foreigners living and working in the capital city or its neighbourhood, in the form of a traditional language school. In accordance with this, accommodation and meals are not provided for students, unlike in the case of the mother institution in Debrecen.
Thematic courses aim to acquaint interested students with Hungarian culture, history and the country. One- to three-week courses will launch in the summer of 2011 with the following titles in English and in Hungarian:
- Young Musicians' Summer Academy and Masterclasses
- Two Capitals, One Country: The Story of Budapest and Debrecen
