N6N7 – Spread This!
2009.12.07The Festival entitled Negyed6 Negyed7 (Quarter6 Quarter7), aiming to spread knowledge about Jewish culture, is promising to be a real curiosity for fans of cultural programs and delicacies.
What we are talking about is the eight-day large scale art festival to be held between the 11th and 19th of December, supported by the JDC (American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee) and coordinated by the Marom Association, born in an unmatched joining of forces among clubs, bars cultural institutions and synagogues in the 6th and 7th Districts.
Irregular City Guide
Apart from concerts, exhibitions, theatrical, children's and gastronomical programs, the festival held at the time of the Chanukah also offers an opportunity to discover the old Jewish quarter of Pest! Expert guides will lead the tours that evoke an atmosphere by presenting the history of the city, while separate English language ramblings will also be organised for non-Hungarian speaking audiences. One thing is certain, no one will be bored. Nearly 130 programs await the interested public at 32 locations.
Why Chanukah?
One of the best known Jewish holidays, Chanukah is the celebration of faith, expectation, trust, solidarity and lights, commemorating the success of the Maccabean revolt and freedom fight, and its most important event, the re-dedication of the Temple of Jerusalem. With the choice of the time, organisers did not only aim to refer to the Jewish history of the city quarter, but also mean to emphasise the unmatched civil solidarity in the community spaces of the quarter, which led to the initiative of this festival. We have eight days to participate actively in the formation of the coming history of this city quarter, whatever our religious or cultural identities may be! It is worth staying for the kindling of the flames at 8:30 PM, so that the eight-branched candelabra can radiate their intimate lights on the assembled audience.
Rotfront
The N6N7 event will begin with the concert of the Rotfront band on the 12th of December at 9 PM in the Take Five pub. There will be abundant acoustic experiences, as the group consisting of members of various nationalities will give the audience a multicultural experience. Russian pub music is mixed with a dozen styles of dance music, such as klezmer, gypsy songs, tango, ragga, and apart from Russian, they will also sing in Hungarian and Ukrainian, accompanied by some German and English rap. Ticket prices are 2000 HUF in advance, and 2500 HUF on the premises.
Hot Pancakes and Doughnuts
In addition to Rotfront, those with a quick ear can count on a number of musical delicacies, there will be Czech jazz, and Dj. Cadik will also whip up the discs. The little ones will be entertained by the Bóbita company, with music, hot chocolate and raspberry soda at the morning pancake show to be held at the Synagogue of Dohány utca. Those who desire some authentic Hungarian gourmet bits should not miss Eszter Fűszeres's doughnut-frying show. The gastro blogger who creates an exciting harmony between kosher cuisine and the twenty-first century will most probably produce appetizing bites in her pan.
The wide program offering is made more colourful by a fire juggling show and a light performance, readings, book launches, and a number of irregular events. Food and clothes will be dispensed, and the Bicycle Market will also open its gates.
During the festival, it is worth making a pilgrimage to the old Jewish quarter, where locations with a special atmosphere and entertainments promising a variety of experiences will await everyone. All the more so, as the majority of the programs can be visited free of charge. As the motto of the event goes: „N6N7 - Spread This!".
